Introduction
Embarking on a journey with Spirit Airlines was an enlightening experience for me. This blog post aims to share my insights and observations, shedding light on the true costs, hidden charges, and the infamous ‘Bare Fare’ model of Spirit Airlines. I hope my experiences can guide you in making informed decisions when considering Spirit Airlines for your travel plans.
The Real Expenses
When I initially chose to fly with Spirit Airlines, the low fares were extremely enticing. For example, I discovered a round-trip flight from Miami to New York for a mere $50. However, it’s crucial to understand that this is a ‘Bare Fare’. This implies that the price only covers the seat and one personal item. The airline charges separately for all other services. Checked luggage, carry-on bags larger than a personal item, and in-flight refreshments are not included. The initial fare may appear low. However, the final cost can escalate quickly once all the extra fees are factored in.

Unforeseen Charges and Precautions
The most substantial hidden cost I encountered was related to baggage. With Spirit, the base fare only includes one personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag. For anything larger, the baggage fees can be quite steep, sometimes even exceeding the cost of the ticket itself. These fees can fluctuate based on the route and the timing of the payment. The later you pay, the more you shell out. Paying at the gate could cost nearly double the amount compared to paying at the time of booking.

Decoding the “Bare Fare”
Spirit Airlines charges separately for all services other than the seat, such as checked luggage, carry-on bags larger than a personal item, and in-flight refreshments. Therefore, while the initial fare may appear low, the final cost can escalate quickly once all the extra fees are factored in. This includes checked and carry-on bags, in-flight refreshments, and other comforts. While this model keeps the upfront costs low, it’s crucial to be mindful of the potential add-on fees.
Buying Add-Ons: Online vs. Airport
I learned that purchasing all add-ons online is significantly cheaper than buying them at the airport. Online purchases do not require assistance from a Customer Service Agent, hence they are cheaper. Moreover, buying a Spirit ticket at the airport allows you to avoid the “Passenger Usage Fee,” which is generally $19.99 per person, per flight.
When to Opt for and Avoid Spirit Airlines
Spirit Airlines can offer a cost-effective choice for large groups and families, provided you are aware of the potential add-on costs and plan accordingly. However, TPG’s 2021 best U.S. airlines list ranked Spirit Airlines eighth out of 10, and customers have reported long bag drop lines and poor communication during delays. You’ll also encounter more fees with Spirit than with most other U.S. airlines. If you’re considering booking a Spirit Airlines flight on a route with limited service, it’s advisable to have a backup plan.

Conclusion
My journey with Spirit Airlines was a valuable learning experience. Despite the initially attractive low fares, the add-on fees quickly accumulated. However, by being aware of these potential costs and planning ahead, I was able to navigate the experience and still save money. If you’re contemplating flying with Spirit Airlines, I hope my experience can help you make an informed decision.
Eric, your comments and analysis are spot on. One additional consideration. Last September we chose Spirit Airlines to fly direct from Fort Lauderdale to Chicago for a family wedding. We always fly Delta direct to Detroit, but Delta doesn’t offer direct to Chicago, and we generally avoid connecting flights whenever possible. We signed up for almost every add-on with Spirit, including the larger seat and had a very positive experience overall.
That is great, if you book it and are aware of all the add-on costs then there are no surprises. That is the key to research to understand what their “Bare Fare” really means. Thank you for your comment.
